Imperial Towers

Durham, North Carolina continues to grow as Buckner Steel nears the completion of a new twelve-story building. Imperial Tower, located at the intersection of I-40 and Page Road, will be a 160’ tall office building providing the corporate headquarters for a pharmaceutical company. The steel fabricator on this project is SteelFab of Virginia, with their office located in Raleigh. The General Contractor, another local company, is Clancy & Theys Construction Company. This project broke ground in the fall of 2007 and steel erection began on January 28th, 2008. Due to some delays with the design and foundations, Clancy & Theys approached Buckner with a very aggressive schedule. They hoped to make up as much time as possible during the steel erection.
The building footprint is 104’ wide & 244’ long. This building will consist of 1400-tons of structural steel, 265,000 sq.ft. of composite floor decking and 26,000 sq.ft. of roof decking. In addition to the structure itself, Buckner will also erect two, permanent, twelve-story stair towers. These stairs are being erected in conjunction with the structural steel and will provide the temporary access for all other building trades. This method of erecting the permanent stairs in conjunction with the structural steel eliminates the need for temporary stair towers. This has provided a much safer and efficient means of access for personnel during construction. In addition to the structure itself, Buckner will also install nearly 23,000 linear feet of perimeter safety cable and over 2000 temporary safety posts. These materials will provide the necessary safety for all the construction trades following the steel erection.
Eleven weeks after the first load of steel arrived onsite, Buckner closes in on the final week of steel erection. Substantial completion of the steel detailing and stair erection is scheduled for the end of April. Clancy & Theys has expressed great gratitude towards Buckner Steel and SteelFab for committing to, and performing to, such an aggressive schedule. Buckner has been able to provide 30,000 sq.ft. of floor area, for concrete pours, a week. Clancy & Theys has been able to make one floor-pour each week; thus releasing the other trades sooner than originally expected. After eleven weeks of erecting, and over 11,000 man-hours, Buckner has been incident and injury free. In addition to a safe project, this job has provided a great amount of work; not only for Buckner Steel, but for all the other local contractors involved. Soon, there will be another attractive building overlooking the ever growing Raleigh/Durham skyline. For Buckner Steel, this project has been a pleasurable experience. With the help of SteelFab of Virginia and Clancy & Theys and with everyone’s commitment to safety and quality, this project should prove to be a success for everyone involved.
